NEW SKINCARE ROUTINE: Winter Skincare Update

Hi Guys!

So I asked on my Twitter what content you most wanted to see on the blog and skincare won by a landslide! People REALLY want to know about my skincare routine, particularly tips on how to care for your skin in the winter. This is perfect because I’ve actually had to change it up slightly for the winter and I can happily say I’m really pleased with the results!

A lovely lady called Amy who works at Botanicals recently reached out to me after reading my blog post about quitting washing my face and asked if I’d like to test some of their products and obviously I said yes! This post isn’t sponsored, I was gifted the products and I thought you guys would be interested in Botanicals because they are natural, cruelty free, vegan, organic and suitable for all skin types. Also, the company is small and is made up entirely of women – right up my street!

So I told Amy that my skin is really dry at the moment due to the cold weather, endless dog walks and central heating and she sent me a Gentle Skincare Discovery Box to try out, so here I am, giving you guys my honest feedback. The sizes I was sent were trial size, so you can buy bigger versions of these products.

Gentle Cleanse Melt

Right off the bat I was really pleased that Amy sent me this because, as you guys know, I no longer wash my face – and I am NEVER going back. Ditching face-wash has gotten rid of any redness/rosacea, tightness that came after washing and actually contributed towards clearing my acne!

I’ve used similar products to the cleanse melt, one from The Bodyshop and one from Liz Earle. The one from The Bodyshop was TOO greasy and melty and stung my eyes, the one from Liz Earle was ok, it was more like a gentle cleanser than a melting balm, which is what Botanicals Gentle Cleanse Melt is. I was really impressed with Botanicals Gentle Cleanse Melt, it melted very easily but not to the greasy, slippery extent that the Bodyshop version did, and when I spread it on my skin it felt more nourishing. I feel like that word is going to come up in this review a LOT because that’s what the entire range I tested felt like. I felt like the melt really sunk into my pores and cleaned them, rather than some cleansers which can feel like they just sit on top of your face. I wiped off the Gentle Cleanse Melt with a damp washcloth gently (my version of face washing) and my skin didn’t feel ‘stripped’ or dry afterwards. It felt really nourished, soft and clean. Also, all of the Botanicals products smell extremely luxurious, like spa products, they all have an essential oil smell about them. Perhaps because all the fragrance is natural, it didn’t irritate my skin at all, and I have VERY sensitive skin. It did make me feel very relaxed and pampered.

Gentle Hydrating Mist

Next up is the Gentle Hydrating Mist. This was interesting as it came with instructions and I wasn’t supposed to use the product how I thought. Instead of simply misting the face, Botanicals suggested spraying the mist onto a cotton pad and wiping gently across the face to remove any bits of makeup or dirt that may have been missed. I REALLY liked doing this, I felt like it toned my pores and helped clean and clear my face without drying it up. I’ve never used a toner that didn’t leave me feeling dry, so I was very impressed, and used it in the morning as a gentle cleanser alternative. It definitely improved the quality of my skin, and I would absolutely buy this again. I think it made my skin tone look more even. I enjoyed sweeping this around my problem area: my jawline and feeling clean.

Pro-Balance Radiance Serum

I ABSOLUTELY HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THIS PRODUCT. Before this product came into my life, I was using The Ordinary Rosehip Oil daily as a kind of serum which I liked, but this is better. It’s thicker, higher quality and more DENSE in a good way. Not watery, it feels like it’s full of goodness and absolutely wiped out any dryness on my skin. It also absolutely helped me clear up my spots. When I started using Botanicals I had JUST attacked a spot on my chin and created a gigantic, red welt. I have learned that the best way to treat a spot or mark on your face is to MOISTURISE it away. Moisturising it helps the skin heal quicker and I really believe that this serum helped to undo some of the bad work I did to my face. The serum following the hydrating mist definitely helped to clear my skin and improve my overall skin quality. I will definitely be switching from my Rosehip oil to this serum and I highly recommend it for anyone with dry skin.

Gentle Moisturiser

You won’t even believe this but most days I didn’t feel like I had to use this following the richness of the serum. Which is CRAZY because my skin is SO dry that I used to have to wake up extra early to do my makeup, because I would have to take into account the time it took to apply about seven layers of thick moisturiser to my skin first. The Gentle Moisturiser did what it said on the tin, it was very gentle and moisturising. I felt like it wasn’t too watery but it wasn’t overly thick either. If the serum is slightly too rich for you, then the Gentle Moisturiser should be perfect. It definitely is suitable for all skin types, sometimes just applying moisturiser can make my face a bit red, this gentle moisturiser didn’t do anything like that. It’s perfect to apply just before makeup.

Overall I was really happy that I gave these new products a go. After finally clearing my skin up considerably, I was a little nervous to give anything new a try in case it had an adverse effect, but I can confidently say Botanicals improved my skin. Out of all the products, the Gentle Hydrating Mist and the Pro-Balance Serum were my holy grail products that I don’t want to leave my life anytime soon, but all the products were soothing, nourishing and gentle.

What I’m continually learning about skin is that the natural, gentle approach is best, no matter what your skin type is. When my skin broke out in acne I’d always had it drummed into my head to wipe pimples out with harsh chemicals and drying them out, but this only makes them come back WORSE and long term, can’t be healthy to my overall skin health. I felt like I was indulging in self-care using Botanicals products, as they smelled so rich and spa-like. I enjoyed having a routine I could sleepily follow as I wound down from the stresses of the day, and it felt good applying the rich serum that I felt was healing my skin.

This is my new routine, and I really feel like my skin is clearer and the texture is much better!

I hope this helps!

Rosie xx

I also gave up washing my face as it dried my skin even more. I don’t wear makeup so just using a warm flannel and patting my face seems to do the trick. I not only have dry skin but also a more ‘mature’ (cos that sounds better than old). Do you know if Botanicals have a range that can tick all my boxes?

Thank you, Rosie. This is just the information I’ve been needing. Winters in Toronto are so harsh on my face. xo

Thank you, Rosie 🙂 this post has alleviated some of my fears about using product on my face. Like me, you have decided to stick with one or two of the products in this line which you feel the most confident in using. I use a wash and a serum in this line, and find its all I need for my combination dry / oily t-zone. It’s also true when you mention these products leave a spa – fresh feeling, and add glow and nourishment to the gentle skin on my face. I love to read and share your posts, so please keep sharing with us 🙂 Jo xx
